Insurance Write Off Categories?

When buying or selling a car, you may have heard terms such as Cat D, Cat C & Cat A etc... these categories relate to vehicles that have been crashed and repaired. The category will depend on the severity of the accident and state of the vehicle and are shown below.

  • CATEGORY A - scrap only, these vehicles should never be seen on the road again & should be crushed. There are no salvagable parts and the only value will be scrap metal (an example of a category A vehicle is a completely burnt out vehicle)
  • CATEGORY B - the bodyshell should have been crushed and never be seen on the road again. Any parts that are salvagable can be taken off & sold, but the rest should be crushed.
  • CATEGORY C - Vehicle extensively damaged and insurer has decided not to repair. The vehicle should have an independent inspection before being allowed back onto the road.
  • CATEGORY D - Vehicle damaged and insurer has decided not to repair.
  • CATEGORY F - Vehicle damaged by fire and insurer has decided not to repair.
