Vauxhall Astra Airbag Light Headache

This Vauxhall Astra has had us scratching our heads, for 24 hours at least. We aquired the vehicle (model year 2000 Vauxhall Astra G Mk4) and knew there would be faults. We scanned the engine to find the fault P1405 relating to the EGR valve, pretty standard stuff and half expected that.

We then scanned the airbag system which thre up 2 errors. We found this strange as there was no airbag light showing on the dashboard. To double check that the airbag dashlight was actually working we disconnected the passenger airbag connection under the seat, the airbag light did not illuminate. We then disconnected the drivers airbag connection, the SRS airbag ECU module and steering wheel airbag connections and still no airbag light. It led me to believe that some fould play had possibly taken place. For a start the screws which hold the clocks in place had flaking paint on them, which is a sign that the screws had previously been removed.

We completely removed the dashboard clock dials and steering wheel to find that the airbag symbol had been covered up behind the dashboard (see picture below)
Airbag Light Covered Vauxhall Astra G
This video shows the full process. We had to remove the clocks and then remove the steering wheel in order to get in behind the clocks to investigate futher. This video will help anybody who needs to remove the dials or steering wheel for any reason.
